Exo Terra has four styles of starter kits for those new to owning a pet reptile. When you are new to owning a pet, things can seem a little overwhelming. Now each of the Exo Terra starter kits will have slight differences. This is because they are meant for different types of reptiles. The four starter kits are Desert, Rainforest, Maya, and Invertebrate.
In the Habitat Kit for Desert dwellers you can get a natural rock looking background, top lighting system, water dish, rock outcrop, and hiding cave. The Habitat Kit for Rainforest reptiles has a full metal screen for top ventilation. It also has the rock background with a water dish and some jungle vines along with some jungle plants. Already you see there are differences. The jungle vines and the jungle plants are unique to the rainforest, whereas the rock outcrop and hiding cave is desert only.

The Maya Habitat Kit is similar to the rainforest kit. It is just a little different and best for snakes, frogs, lizards, and geckos from the Mayan rainforest as opposed to other rainforests of the world. The instruction manual will discuss information regarding these particular reptiles over others. While the Exo Terra starter kits do have lighting systems it should be mentioned that they do not have the light bulb. You will need to purchase the bulb separately based on the actual pet reptile you will have. There is a choice in getting the right bulb. For example the Repti Glo 2.0 is for snakes, amphibians and nocturnal animals. The Repti Glo 5.0 is best for tropical species and the Repti Glo 10.0 is for desert species.

The Habitat Kit for Invertebrates is the most extensive Exo Terra starter kit. It will have a top light system with the bulb included. Added to the products in the kit are insect water dish, jungle plant, reptile cave, and thermometer and hygrometer. The thermometer and hygrometer help keep the tank regulated for the reptile’s natural habitat. A hygrometer allows the right temperature and humidity. It is imperative for some reptiles to have these extra features. You can of course buy them separately, but it can be more affordable in the kit. The invertebrate kit is also best for scorpions, insects, and spiders over reptiles like snakes.

You do not have to purchase the Exo Terra Vivarium starter kits, but you may find it is the least expensive option open to you at the time when you purchase your reptile.
